May is full of the most significant, precious, fortunate events, and great holidays in the 20th century in the history of Azerbaijan. The 28th of May – Republic Day, solemnly celebrated, learnt, relived and become eternal everywhere in our republic, being one of great days of May is the day when Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was founded.

The 28th of May, being engraved on history of our nation`s struggle for freedom and independence with golden letters, is the day which every Azerbaijani citizen is proud of and when the dreams blossom. This dream of Azerbaijan nation, who lived for ages with the dream of freedom and independence, came true on this bright day of May in the beginnings of the last century. The foundation of the first independent republic in the East based on free, democratic and secular values was declared to the world. Our nation released from the colonialism of Russia Tsardom lasting for more than one century on the 28th of May, 1918 and established the first democratic republic in the East. On the same day the Declaration of Independence was adopted in the meeting of Azerbaijan National Board. The foundation of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was a new stage and historical event in the life of our nation in the 20th century.
