Armed Forces Day is celebrated today in Azerbaijan. Armenia started armed attempts to enlarge its territory at the expense of the territory of Azerbaijan from the first day when the national state was founded. The first military unit, particularly Independent Corps was established on the 26th of June, 1918 by the resolution of ADR government. This resolution legally allowed the first democratic government in Muslim world of the East to establish its army. The decree on military service – conscription of the government followed this. Significant results were gained on national army- building in Azerbaijan in a short period of time. The National Army of Azerbaijan has successfully overcome the aggressive attacks of Armenian Army many times.

The Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Azerbaijan adopted a decision on creating the National Army on the 9th of October, 1991.

The 26th of June was declared as Armed Forces Day according to the resolution of Azerbaijan President dated 22.05.1998.
